Rainforest Traditions 24/25

Begin your day with a short drive to Cooya Beach where you will be welcomed by a First Nations Custodian. They will share
their cultural heritage and practices that are still continued on this traditional homeland.
After an introduction to the traditional fishing activity of spear throwing and handling, follow your guide with spear in hand
along Cooya beach, observing cultural medicine and food plants. If the tide is suitable, your guide may also take you along
for their daily spear fishing and gathering for their families in the mangroves and mudflats.

Return with the guides to see Kuku Yalanji artefacts and hear stories from their traditional lands before continuing to your
day.

A short drive away is Janbal Gallery. Here you’ll learn how to understand stories told through Aboriginal paintings, while
creating your own souvenir of Australian art to take home, under the guidance of acclaimed Aboriginal artist, Brian “Binna”
Swindley. As well as learning about Aboriginal ochre paints, Indigenous art history and painting techniques, Binna will tell
you stories about traditional construction materials. After creating your very own masterpiece, we continue to lunch.

This afternoon we head to Mossman Gorge Visitor Centre. On arrival, wander through the indigenous art gallery and shop;
showcasing the art and crafts of the local Kuku Yalanji artists.
The gallery also stocks a range of gifts including jewellery, cards, small artefacts and clothing, designed by Indigenous
artists.

It’s now time for your Dreamtime walk to begin. You’ll be welcomed with a traditional smoking ceremony that cleanses the
body and welcomes you into the rainforest as a friend. The walk then meanders through the lush rainforest, where you will
see traditional, handmade huts or “humpies” on display. Your Indigenous guide will talk about traditional plant use, identify
bush food sources, and provide an enchanting narrative of the rainforest and their special relationship with this unique,
tropical environment. Your guide will also demonstrate traditions like making bush soaps and ochre painting. At the end of
the tour enjoy bush tea and damper.

After your Dreamtime walk, you have the option to take a swim in Mossman Gorge before heading back to your
accommodation.
